My blogs seem to have a theme; Customer Stories. I really can’t help myself because their stories are far more delightful than any I could come up with on my own.
A few weeks ago we had our monthly sale day, for which we send our customers an email notification. A loyal customer makes the trip for these sales, who wouldn’t for a discount. Every girl loves a sale. This particular customer has to drive a bit to visit our little shop, so she combines it with visits to see her grandchildren. This time she chose to visit Mélange without her granddaughter. After spending time browsing and making her choices she came to the register to make her purchases and have a chat with us. Which we love! She asked if she could have an extra bag for a gift she had bought her granddaughter. I was delighted to do so and asked which item was for her so I could do a special gift wrap. She admitted that the gift was purchased at Target, but if she got home and her granddaughter saw bags from Mélange, aka the “pink store” her granddaughter would be upset that she didn’t get to go. On a side note, Mélange has always been better known as the Pink and Black Store, and probably always will be.
So, we were happy to be part of the ruse and gave her an extra bag with some pink tissue for the “Target” gift.
About an hour went by and the customer came back, she decided there was one more thing she had to have. To our enjoyment, she told us the following; when she arrived to see her granddaughter and handed over the Mélange bag she was excited to receive it even though she hadn’t gotten to go. However, when she opened the gift, she was puzzled and said, “You can’t get this at the PINK Store”. She replied, you are right (she had been found out) and told her she got it at Target because she knew it was something she would like. Her granddaughter was not to be swayed and kept repeating….but “you can’t get this at the pink store”, “you can’t get this at the pink store”. At this point I had to ask, “How old is your granddaughter?” Her reply, 5! She is now our favorite 5 year old customer. Moral of the story……Get it at the PINK store.
